Mr. Ali Akbar Velayati received Secretary-General of the Islamic Union of Kurdistan Salahuddin Bahauddin on Wednesday where they discussed ways of tackling the sectarian divisions of Iraq into Sunni, Shia, and Kurd groups which Velayati believed would undermine the unitary state as the official line of policy promoted by Baghdad government; “you have been active in past campaigns against despotic leader [Saddam Hussein] and promoted the unity of Islamic sects; the Islamic Republic of Iran supports Iraqi territorial integrity,” Velyati told Bahauddin. “Iraq is an important democratic country among the Arabs and in the region; the Army had succeeded in defeating terrorism and extremism and centrifugal forces within the country.”
Velayati recommended countries who had been supporting terrorists in Iraq for abandoning their policy and ending support for their proxies; “they should leave Iraqis to decide on their own political future,” he emphasized.
